More Weather Related - This Misty Morning

We do get all sorts of weather in New York - blizzards, hurricanes, heat waves etc etc. What we rarely get is mist or fog.

Lo and behold, this morning (5th anniversary of the very thrilling plane crash/rescue on the Hudson) there was a mist hovering over the Hudson with the sun fighting to get through. Here from the dog run...

then walking home - and no, there isn't a sepia filter or anything - just what the phone saw.

So I went up to the roof where things were bright and looked toward the river. It reminded me of when I was at school in the midlands of England and looked west from the Malvern Hills over the valley of Bredon. Then I  walked down to Chelsea Piers

where I saw a boat.

from the gym I saw a tower in Jersey

and the golf cages swathed in mist.

Hudson River

New Jersey on the other side....

Such browny/purply water.....

and reflections sparkling  on a metal hull.

I rather like the old fashioned boats

especially this one!

On the Hudson

Contrary to what the flag suggests, this is not Greece (ha!) but Chelsea Piers.

It is extremely, bluely, cold.

The golf range looks abandoned, and I dread to think what temperature the water is.

I come upon rather a jolly crew, and ask if I can take their picture.
Hint: Pretend to be a tourist. Tourists take pictures of anything -- no questions asked.
I wonder what these guy are doing. They say: fishing.

"You should wait 'til the diver comes up! ...or what we call bait!"
Much laughter ensues.

Glug, glug, glug. Ice, debris and who knows what else........

But, lo and behold !.....

The diver emerges in his deep-sea diving suit....

And waves quite merrily at me.

Things that Go

A rather usual sort of day..... subway downtown.

A walk in the new park at the end of 23rd Street

and a visit to the Museum of the American Indian in the former custom house at One Bowling Green which used to be a custom house. Here a mural makes the Hudson look much busier than it does today.

My main blog is now here

Ice and Horses

The Hudson River is cluttered with thick chunks of ice.
The center of the river moves extremely swiftly. How one would hate to fall into it.

Chelsea Piers. Friday afternoon, looking west towards New Jersey.

Clearing the ice on Pier 63.

Mechanical horses for children at Chelsea Piers.....

...and real horses on 8th Avenue.

Metal

The skeleton of an old building by the side of the Hudson.

There is something delicious about  metal decaying.

Time to clean up the house and make things sparkle so candles can reflect light.

Monochrome sparklies in ABC's window --tasteful, kitsch and charming all in one shot.
I lust after a glittery little deer.

The Salvation Army are out in force and good for them.

Water

Just south of Chelsea Piers these rotting posts lead out into the Hudson River and towards New Jersey.
An overcast day.
These old posts are rather melancholy.

Animals are more cheerful than inanimate objects.
The dogs in the dog park --particularly the chocolate lab -- are loving the paddling pool provided for their entertainment.
This park is around Christopher Street.

Heading south on the bike path we come upon this marvelous duck pond with fish big enough to eat..............

And a lotus and lily pads and tall buildings reflected in them.

At South Street Seaport, I look down into the swirling waters of the East River and look at the art installations of waterfalls that lots of people have taken super photos of. Ming the Merciless has super ones.
I see the free water taxi which would take me to IKEA in Brooklyn. It is packed to capacity. Maybe it's fun to go there.

By the Water

It is easy to forget that Manhattan is an island - it's so very urban. It is quite easy to ignore the water altogether.
The other day we walked down to the Hudson River where all sorts of building is going on.
For so long the dock areas were neglected and even scary - now they are getting very swanky indeed.

The tall sails of the boats are set against the tall wire cages of the golf driving range.

The motor boat has a wonderful name: The Moroccan Queen.
