Subway Series

Was heading down to Soho this morning.

and discovered that the subway seemed a very popular place to sleep.

The end of the line was about four stops on so I expect they woke up then.

In the photos the metal rails look like the intestines of a prehistoric fish ....sort of.

Anyway, we get to Spring Street

and emerge into the light

where I see a very jolly Christmas dress
(which I do not buy since I doubt I would look good in it)

and pretty jewels in another window. I buy rubber weather
boots and a bar of soap and some other things
which I will not mention since the recipients
have been known to read this blog.

A child sleeping in the subway

and another child in a jolly hat heading somewhere nice, I hope.

Questions

All sorts of ugly plastic boxes give away brochures.

This one is for the Gotham Writers' Workshop. Oddly, I do think writing is sexy, well, not the writing itself, but the brains that go into it. If the writing is interesting of course......

I really, really want this bird (hiding Waldo-like) to be a mocking bird. Anyone know?

A late pizza lunch in Soho. I asked these cheerful girls if I could take their photo as they looked very 'New-Yorky'. They said: "Oh, we're from London too!"

The new Linda McCartney photo book on display at Taschen, Soho.
An amazing walk down memory lane for those who grew up in the sixties and early 70's.
Highly recommended.

A Walk along Broome Street, Soho

By late Friday afternoon the rain stopped and the sky turned blue

which made the puddles turn a nice blue.

A classic water tower above a substantial loft building.

Another of the same with bright puffy clouds.

But the star of the evening was this  -- probably the very worst sofa in the world.
For other shadowshots go here.

Having Had Enough of........

........this

I went down to Dean and DeLuca in Soho

 to contemplate

spring flowers and smell them too.

In the evening they took the top of the Empire State Building away.

Sullivan Street, Soho and Fashionistas

Walked down to Canal Street on Sunday morning.
In Soho grafitti has become a rather self-conscious art form.
Visually engaging in a sort of way.

Something rather blue on Sullivan Street.

Fashionistas on West Broadway.
And a very young one on Houston Street.
(See below.)

Distressed

High winds this morning billowing the blue tarps on the new building opposite.
Performance art at its best.

The subway map on the C and E lines is now an example of altered art .
Transmuted into something entirely new.

Near Pearl Paint on Lispenard Street the graffiti has reached the higher echelons of palimpsest--or something...

An altered movie poster. Also Lispenard Street.

Another New York art form: the appalling tabloid headline.
Poor A-Roid
A-Fraud
Etc etc.

Serenity at last in Soho.

Shadow Shot Sunday

R's photo taken on 23rd Street.

Please go to Heyharriet for the complete list of Shadow Shotters

Light shining through a roof in the Meatpacking District.
This was taken last Sunday. We have had two going-for-walks weekends in a row.

Yesterday. Spring Street, Soho. This is an homage de Paz. She is the queen of fire escape art.

I get a bit bored of double reflections all over.... but at least they make shadows...this is rather a swanky place in Soho with distressed metal and indoor moss etc etc. I liked it.

When you look into a window, your brain compensates for reflections and distractions and sees only one thing. A camera acts differently. How tiring it would be to see two things at once.

Seen in Soho

Spring Street. A real truck trying to blend in with its surroundings....

  Near Cosby Street

Spring Street again and an enigmatic young man.

He would have been more enigmatic still if he hadn't smiled.

Exotic Costumes and Some Colors

This rather splendid get up was spotted on 8th Avenue around 15th Street where the wearer vanished down into the subway.
 I never saw his face.

Is he sending very mixed messages?

I admired the amazing attire of this artist at ABC Carpet. She was happy to have her photo taken --but could I buy her a cold drink? I did.
I don't actually live at ABC Carpet -- or only part of the time. My excuse is that it's on the way to the Green Market which, since it sells organic produce etc, counts as morally pure.....

This young person, dressed for the season, was as interested as I was.....

Would I want to live in a house where patterns abound? No. Are they splendid to look at? Obviously. Anthropologie, West Broadway and Spring Streets.

What a color for a floor! What toasty warm scarves. C.P Shades, Grand Street,Soho.

Almost Thanksgiving

I went to Dean and Delucca in Soho yesterday to buy olives.

The cashier was very cheerful there too.

These birds caught my eye in a rather crunchy granola looking shop.

As did this little, real bird hopping round in the drizzle.
A pleasant surprise when I got home....

........a  package of presents from India, via Norway.
Britt-Arnhild is a wonderfully generous friend and blogger supreme.
Look at the astounding richness of the purple in the scarf!
