Chelsea Market/Fruit and Bread

The Old Nabisco Biscuit factory is now home to lots and lots of food shops. Excellent for food snobs and if you aren't one already you will soon become one. An excellent fruit market where everyone goes from restaurant chefs to just plain people....

...and firemen who, when not fighting fires, seem to do a lot of cooking. A handsome, helpful crew held in high esteem by New Yorkers.

They keep the fruit market very chilly, so the check-out girls wear sweaters even in June.

The front door of the same...

Just across the way are the bakers at Sarabeth's busy making the most delicious  bread, cakes and cookies. The nearest to home-baked you can get round here.

Yum!

They even provide a table to sit at to enjoy it all........

My main blog is here

Things to Do

Buy cup cakes from a truck on 5th Avenue.

Line up for a casting call on 24th Street.

Feel anxious that one might not be chosen.

Check the cell phone in Chelsea Market while looking an
awful lot like a Duane Hansen sculpture.

Wash hands on the High Line.

And, of course, take photographs of it all.
Mexican visitors on 22nd Street.

A Lot of Urban Metal of All Sorts

This is the inside of an ATM machine from Chase Bank.
The colors are rather splendid.

This is one of Robert's paintings in progress.
At the top you can see his computer.
The circle at the bottom is a roll of tape not a wheel.

This is a very jolly red bicycle.

These are the new doors of the Chelsea Market with new metal
pull handles. Needless to say the whole place is a work in
progress. For some reason I like the color of the ladder.

Shadow Shot Sunday/Spring Almost

Spring has sprung -- at least in Macy's Windows.
34th Street and 7th Avenue.

On Saturday afternoon I went looking for shadow to join Heyharriet and the gang.
Starbcks at 8th Avenue and 19th Street.

A pretty townhouse between 8th and 9th Avenues in Chelsea.

Down at Chelsea Market, they are re-doing the big space that used to be a florist.
Something exciting going on with the floor.

The macaroons at the new French patisserie on 23rd Street
are wearing spring dresses.

Pink

At the bank the ATM machine has a hole where its heart should be.
Hmmm..........

Blogging tend to turn people into large sized kindergartners trotting with joy through the turning seasons.
I have to admit this is fun.
It is also a decorating and shopping opportunity.
Here the doors of United Cerebral Palsy on 23rd Street.

Mylar hearts in the Window of Dallas Barbecue.

A present from Constance who  knows how to pack a parcel
 and a card from Stephanie.

At Chelsea Market  Belgian designer chocolate with pink pepper. (Who would have thought?)

Pink wine, too.

Virtue and Delight

New York turns perfectly ordinary people into food snobs  -- --simply because everything you could ever desire and then some is available to you almost every minute of the day.
Blogging turns perfectly ordinary people into the sort of weirdos who take pictures of their lunch.
Smoked salmon tartine at La Pain Quotitien.

New  lunch special at the same place. Tuscan white beans, bread soaked in olive oil, frissee, parma ham. Yum.

Now for the really good stuff.
To cut to the chase.
Chelsea Market. Brownies, blondies, brownies of every flavor you could dream of (mocha, white chocolate, caramel etc etc) in big sizes and tiny. People say, "I don't really do sweet things but just a taste....." Ha!
Pat invites me behind the scenes at the Fat Witch bakery. This is my lucky day.

Such a cheery, plump contented witch who now pops up all over the place even on tea.
Middle aged women giggle. A fat witch they say: ah that's me.

I think green tea is meant to be good for you.

ps.  My favorite is the white chocolate brownie.

Shadow Shot Sunday/Chelsea

For other Shadow Shot pictures go to Hey Harriet

.

A warm afternoon after lots of rain. Here an old building on 18th Street and 7th Avenue is reflected in a new one.

Lovely colors on shopfronts on 9th Avenue.

The sort of doorway that lures one in - also 9th Avenue.

The flowers hop that had the two interesting cats in the entrance to Chelsea Market is no more. It is being turned into something else, so the windows are blocked out with posters of other parts of the market.
As greedy people, we come here often.
The Italian shop has excellent lime blossom honey.

Shadow Shot Sunday

Back in New York at last!
These pictures are for Hey Harriet's Shadow Shot Sunday - but I haven't got too many shadows in New York.
This first shot is of the unending escalator at the 42nd Street bus terminal that we use when getting a bus to go to visit our son. We are resolutely car-free in Manhattan and make some efforts to be 'green'.
For example living in an apartment with one boiler for 70 units is much more eco-friendly than 70 individual boilers.
Preach, preach.
How dull.

From a building on 13th Street where I have my hair cut, you can see the red brick of Chelsea Market - the huge old Nabisco factory on 15th Street.

Here schoolgirls have their lunch sitting on stone benches.............

..............and you can buy real Italian food and all sorts of "Imports from Marrakech".
We went to the newish "T-Salon" the other day - very swanky and stylish - but the iced tea wasn't cold and the breakfast tea wasn't hot. So we have crossed them off our list.

This last picture hasn't anything to do with shadows at all. Just a shot of Saturday morning in New York.
The paper, peonies and herbs from the green market in Union Square.
Real strawberries - small and sweet - which rival or even exceed the ones in Morocco.
