London Snapshots/Soho

Quite a lot of London in one picture --the rain, the phone booth, the motor scooters....

Cheery flowers in Berwick Street market

cascading outside a pub

in jam jars outside Liberty's

where the flowers are always exquisite.

Liberty's is always quite stunning inside....

and out --late 19th century faux Tudor

echoed in Soho Square.

Snacks at Patisserie Valerie

and doors and windows

again in Soho Square.

Brattle Street, Cambridge

Quite enough time spent in the car, so we go for a walk. I just wander about but wikipedia is full of lots of useful information.

The very beginning of fall

with drifts of Michaelmas daisies and the first leaves on the lawn.

Impressively huge, prosperous houses that have been prosperous for many years.

Color choices are limited for house paint --so mostly yellow and gray and pink.

The traditional picket fence....

long windows and porches and morning glory.

The yellow car a slightly jarring note.

A tennis club near the Charles River.

Back to Brattle Street. The Longfellow House. George Washington's Headquarters (see Wikipdia).

Such ferns and porches....

and a tree that G.W  probably saw as a sapling.

The formal garden

laid out with low hedges.

A lovely long window.

Then the weather grew cloudy.

Road Trip

When we heard it would cost $450 to ship one of Robert's paintings to Boston for an exhibition, we decided it would be fun (and cheaper) to deliver it ourselves. Hm.....
So we rented a car.....

This is somewhere in Connecticut. (Photos always awful from moving vehicle).

And somewhere in Massachusetts with a great deal of road ahead of us.

and this is almost anywhere along the way (note American flag.)

Gas and Big Mac's....... How I detest the current buzzword 'iconic'....oh well.

There was a drive up window at Honeydew Donuts.....

but we plumped for MacDonalds.....

an irresistible gun.

So we got there, delivered the painting....

savored the delights of Cambridge (post tomorrow)

turned round the next morning and found this glorious onion dome in Hartford marked United States Armaments Manufactury....

and some one (Uncle Sam? Honest Abe? A car salesman?) peeping out at us over the hedge.
Safe home now 436 miles later.
Math: Car rental $150 + gas $50 + parking and tolls $25 + assorted horrible snacks + gift for my cousin
who had us to stay.......equals grand savings of approximately 37cents....

People/Food/Light

They are always filming Law and Order round here.

The other day on the way to the dog run I saw a snack table set up. I always wander past looking hopeful. Anyway, we got chatting about the dog. Later on someone said, "That was IceT..." He was very nice. Needless to say, I did not know who he was.

Food is endlessly interesting. Here a new snack bar under the High Line.

They make pizza too.

Dickson's in Chelsea Market.

This morning the light was astoundingly clear and bright.

So I took a lot of photos of random people wandering about. (The poor dog has got quite used to stop- and-start walks.)

22nd Street

more 22nd Street

Then on the way home from the park. (Buster's friend Charlotte).
Theses last two photos nothing to do with anything......

On the way to Queens on Tuesday night.
And splendid graffiti from the Meatpacking District.

Street Fair

London Terrace Annual Flea market

As I've often said before, I really don't like flea markets and old junk though I can quite understand why some people love the element of treasure hunting and the chance to take home a very well muscled mannequin....

a slightly halloween-y cape

an over-rouged figurine

but what's this?

a Grecian helmet! Gosh!

The antique toasters are rather beautiful.

Garden City Cathedral

This photo has escaped from the post below -- I just rather like her --and she's old.
