Ice and Horses

The Hudson River is cluttered with thick chunks of ice.
The center of the river moves extremely swiftly. How one would hate to fall into it.

Chelsea Piers. Friday afternoon, looking west towards New Jersey.

Clearing the ice on Pier 63.

Mechanical horses for children at Chelsea Piers.....

...and real horses on 8th Avenue.

  2. Lovely Elisabeth! My daughter might see this for yesterday she went to New York for the weekend, and she was happy for the first time because of the fact that you have chosen this formidable personality for president. What a man!!!

  3. Brrr that water looks so cold...
I'm not familiar with your policing system - are horses used as a means of transportation as well or is this a tourist attraction?

  4. Winter in NY. How many snowdays do you have?

  5. Janice: I think the horses are used for policing events with crowds. Earlier in the day my husband had seen these horses outside the grocery and the big horse was looking down on a little dog.
They stand the horses near traffic so they get used to noise etc. The officers who ride them have cool boots....
Britt-A: Not sure exactly how many snow days as it varies from year to year. But it can get VERY cold here though maybe not so cold as Norway!
ReaderWil: Yes, we are thrilled to have a new president.

  7. The positive thing about falling into the Hudson's ice water is that it would not be longlived...Our waters are very cold here, as well, even in the summer they estimate that it takes less than 10 minutes for hypothermia to set in. Love the Horses- So regal!

  18. Brrrr! I get gripy out here in the PNW when it drops near freezing! But rarely does it get cold enough to freeze more than the inch of water in the chicken's container. I can't imagine chunky river ice. (I need to go get a lap blanket now).
