Ugly

So much of what we see is not very pretty. But, having said it's ugly, I notice the pink metallic gleam near the beer can.

Whoever put up this tape has the same organizational skills as me. Bravo, we are loose in the world.

The person who designed this snack bar (on 7th Avenue and 23rd Street) had been to the Pre-School School of color choice. The people who work here are pretty cheerful anyway.

A close up of stuff you can buy. My new camera can capture things like this.
Whether it should is another matter entirely. The shop is called CUTE TOONZ.

A long suffering old door on the eastside. On the left a dress of pure white.

  1. Your last "ugly" shot is my fave. You're really getting me into the graffiti mode!

  2. What a beautiful old door and such a lovely gentle colour - pity about the graffiti though.

  5. oh Elizabeth! - this group of photos are some of my favs so far - I'm all about the 'beauty' in ugliness - that first shot, I just love - of course the second one of the torn up street and the oxymoronness of the last one - I know that's not really a word and I'm sure I just caused that feeling of nails on a blackboard for proper speaking people, but alas!

  6. You have a wonderful sense of humor, Elizabeth. Had me laughing this morning with your captions. So much entertainment in a few lines! P.S. I enjoy your mention of the verifications!

  9. Well, it's interesting, but "ugly" may look "interesting" if you simply change your focus! Beautiful pictures!
Elizabeth, I just saw that you and Robert have or had your birthdays! May hubby and I have our birthdays also very close together, but in February! Happy birthday to both of you!
Is it possible to see Robert's (blurred)pictures on your blog?
BTW, your now profile picture is great!
    Have a nice week!

  10. Elizabeth, I love them all but the door is my favorite. I especially love the contrast of the pure and the nasty. It's art and it's great! Kim

  11. Elizabeth, it is you! I'm as happy to see your face on your profile as I was to meet you in person. It's fun to see who is on the other side of the lens. That new camera is taking you in new directions. Even the ugly looks interesting on your blog.

  14. I used to find graffiti interesting and 'artiistic' but after 4 1/2 years of seeing it everywhere in the inner city of LA, I got really really tired of it, especially around my neighborhood.

I had to laugh at your humor-- your organizational skills, the pre school colors.

  15. There is something beautiful and interesting in each of the "ugly" pictures. The door could be beautiful if it were allowed to be.

  19. I tried to capture the displeasing to the eye, the unsightly. I find it is very hard to do. MZ did an exhibition about Weegee's work, I was astonished how even an image of an "ugly" crime scene can turn beautiful, and not that I would ever think of art only as "beautiful." Somehow it is most often the story behind the image that bears all the ugliness of this world.
