Wednesday Evening at Sunset

Looking west towards the Hudson from our apartment the sinking sun is reflected in the windows.

A little later the whole sky turned an astounding scarlet -------I have not fiddled with the color in the photo.
Robert said that the sky looked a lot like a very red sea.

Saturday: Shadows, Squares and Colors

What a hideous old radiator. What messy scraps of paper on it.
The morning light makes it tolerable.

Isabel and I take pictures of the best recent piece

Later we go to a notions shop in my least favorite part of town.

The ribbons made me want to turn into
the sort of person who does crafts all the time.

I love this color and this one, and what about that one?
Such goggle-eyed greed.

For lots of other ShadowShots go here.

Friday Windows and Reflections

Peonies at Union Square. Yum.
I cannot think why I didn't buy them.

A very shiny tasteful window display at ABC Carpet on Broadway.

A very shiny untasteful window display at a clairvoyant's on 20th Street.
What's this with clairvoyants anyway?
Note the reflection of the psychic traffic cone....

In keeping with the clairvoyant theme, this window
had sort of ectoplasm in it -- or a sheet.....

Between 5th and 6th Avenues.
Almost chartreuse.

A Rather Chartreuse Day

This metallic model serves for all seasons on 9th Avenue.
She is wildly photogenic.

The camera delights in glitter and reflections
and that dreadful, lovely color chartreuse.

Time to wear green to read in the park.

Time to repaint the park railings.
A seven person job.

Details/Rajasthan/India

The textures and bright colors remind me in some ways of Morocco.
Rather a change from austere New York.

Subtle shabby-chic...

Please notice the little bird trying his best to blend in.

Ice cream anyone?

Waiting for the bus.

Riding on an elephant.

The chair by the door. Mandawa.

Wall. Mandawa.

Shopkeeper.

Such an unusual color combination.

Ugly

So much of what we see is not very pretty. But, having said it's ugly, I notice the pink metallic gleam near the beer can.

Whoever put up this tape has the same organizational skills as me. Bravo, we are loose in the world.

The person who designed this snack bar (on 7th Avenue and 23rd Street) had been to the Pre-School School of color choice. The people who work here are pretty cheerful anyway.

A close up of stuff you can buy. My new camera can capture things like this.
Whether it should is another matter entirely. The shop is called CUTE TOONZ.

A long suffering old door on the eastside. On the left a dress of pure white.

Signs of the Times

The Fat Witch Bakery in Chelsea Market celebrates the season.

As does a restaurant on 5th Avenue.
So, what with approaching Halloweeen and total financial meltdown, what have we to do but make merry?

I went to buy Halloween cards at the best card shop in the world where the windows were filled with interesting creatures.

For some reason, dancing seems very attractive right now. We danced to the German oompah band last Sunday upstate.
The black-clad figure enjoys herself - pity about the blue feet in front of her face.

Mr. Yellow seems cheerful in spite of the skulls.

Queens Again

It seems to be our week for going to Queens which is almost like taking a trip to a wonderful exotic place -except you get there by subway........

Deniz introduced us to little India where the clothes are decidedly un-Manhattanlike. ie they are gloriously colored.

All these shown here are suitable for parties.

Even the vegetables are different. This is kerala. It is very green and looks somewhat like a cucumber.
Anyone out there know how one eats it?

The grocery stores have bright bags of flour and rice.........

........and all sorts of incense sticks - including "Cannabis" and "Opium". Hm........

This is Deniz looking color-coordinated at the Thai restaurant.

And a lonely young man left after dark in a shop which sells everything.

Excellent Dumpling

On a cold Sunday we decided to walk from 23rd Street to Canal Street.
Our destination was "Excellent Dumpling" - the best dumplings in town.
This building - a little bit run down - is on Canal Street itself. It looks very Chinese.

This sign is on the corner of Lafayette and Canal - really cheerful looking.
Note the American flag behind it.
Lots of people are out on the street hustling handbags.
It reminds me of Marrakech and I want to say "Blesh" - "It's not necessary."
We realise we have learned the ins and outs of dealing with street vendors in Arabic rather well. not much intellectual conversation though.

In fact there are far too many people altogether on Canal Street.
Everything is amazingly cheap - but mostly the sort of thing that you wouldn't want if it was given to you.
For someone under the age of ten, it would be bliss.

Robert stands outside "Excellent Dumpling".
Here you get the fastest of fast food.
You sit at a table where the hot tea is already there in a metal pot.
We order scallion pancakes and steamed vegetable dumplings and a Tsingtao beer which arrive almost as soon as the words are out of our mouths.
Delicious. Best scallion pancakes in the universe.
Excellent dumplings.
We are handed our enormous bill - $10.36 -as we cram the last dumplings into our mouths.
As soon as the plates are empty, they are whisked away.
They make the service at McDonald's seem glacial.

It is early lunch time.
The tables are full -Chinese people, tourists, every ethnicity on the planet.
The servers are very busy and efficient.
People are waiting in line to get in.
We are back out on the street in less than half an hour.
It's a great place and totally worth it.
