Saturday: Shadows, Squares and Colors

What a hideous old radiator. What messy scraps of paper on it.
The morning light makes it tolerable.

Isabel and I take pictures of the best recent piece

Later we go to a notions shop in my least favorite part of town.

The ribbons made me want to turn into
the sort of person who does crafts all the time.

I love this color and this one, and what about that one?
Such goggle-eyed greed.

For lots of other ShadowShots go here.

  1. Love the windows and that notions shop must be fun. I enjoy textiles and need to check out a shop with ribbons, but there may not be so many around anymore.

  2. You certainly DO know how to re-create a radiator.

You and Isabel taking photos in New York together? I love the thought of it. I'm thinking you should pick up some of those beautiful ribbons and give it a go.

I also think it's time to plan a day in NYC.

  3. Yes Elizabeth, it is easy to get carried away when visiting that kind of shop - I have a study full of ribbon, buttons and threads to prove it!

  9. Beautifully delineated shadows, Elizabeth – and I rather like that radiator cover. Radiators are normally not very pretty. Square hues of one colour and ribbons of blue - gorgeous. (The rows and rows of paint colours in art shops are my downfall – I want them ALL.) I do like the colours in your unfavourite part of town as well…even the cars are bright and breezy.

  11. Great images! I love to fondle ribbons in those sorts of stores. While many quilters incorporate ribbons and other doo-dads into their work, I haven't found a way yet. My big weakness is threads!

  13. I go positively nuts in a ribbon store. My favourite is VV Rouleaux in London. Have you ever shopped there? Pure ribbon heaven!

  14. Interesting shops and beautiful ribbons! Sometimes shops are so inviting that I want to buy the things around me, but when I get home I don't know what to do with them and give them away. Nice photos, Elizabeth.

  15. What a nice thoughts of taking some photos in the old radiator. Who cares if scraps of papers layin on there?

It gave you a very nice and shabby shot though. Like that way. Impulse!

    cheers...

  16. Ribbon does that, I have boxes of it and no idea what to do with it. I avoid those shops now.

I do like that big window.

  17. Mmm, I love ribbon, too. And buttons.

I've been reading about Salvador Dali and he once painted tromp de l'oeil covers of radiators . . . to cover the unsightly radiators which his wife disliked.

  22. When I stayed at an aunt house in Australia years ago, the first thing I was fascinated was the radiator..we never have them here, obviously due to the hot weather but we've got tons of hideous air condition outside every building and house. Have a great week ahead/hugs..........M

  27. I must be the only person in the world that does not know what a notions shop is. Help! I'm a philistine!
The ribbons are inspirational for anyone, and the windows - just fabulous. Your colour sense is stunning.

Midtown. It is tacky and awful --though one can find hidden delights even there.....
