An Old Fashioned Sort of Day

Such gadgets they give you on iphoto. Although these photos
were taken yesterday and the day before how easy it is to give
them that retro look. The chair outside the clairvoyant's
shop certainly looks as if its better days are over .
23rd Street.

I really hate clowns. I don't find them funny at all.
I didn't ask this young man why he had dressed himself
up like one on a sunny Tuesday morning though he was
quite happy to have his photo taken.
9th Avenue and 24th Street.

This dapper dude --  hat, crease in pants and  shiny vest --
makes the rest of us look pretty sloppy.

Northport on Long Island has a distinctly retro feel to it.
The Sweetshop still makes its own ice cream.

Vintage neon next door to the Sweetshop.

  1. I like the 1958 feeling.

If I wished to see the clairvoyant I think I might sit on the chair and count the passage of time before he/she emerged - quality control.

  2. Love the retro look on that first photo. Transports one back to older days...

  3. The special effects do give your pics a very vintage look. I love all the possibilities in photoshop - AND - I never believe a picture anymore. I mean people can shift reality in photography so easily now.

I also detest clowns. They creep me out.

    Have a good day, Elizabeth.

  4. The sepia tone brings us right back to the 40s. Very atmospheric, you'd have us fooled if you said it was 2009.

  5. Love that vintage effect. Subtle and nice. Clowns always creeped me out. My mother hung two hideous big clown pictures in my room when I was little. I could never get to sleep!

  7. I really enjoyed this collection. Everything new made old again. What a difference color can make. Peace.

    that dapper gentleman is wonderful!

I'm not a clown person either - I find them creepy and sad and always think of I can smell old booze around them

  14. Yes elizabeth - I agree the photos all have a retro look. As usual you have an eye for the unusual.

  15. The sepia tone works really well with your subject! I don't like clowns either but I like your portrait of one. This would be a fun line of photography to explore further - the classic, timeless image.

  16. I was just about to write "this colour palette really suits the subject" . . . and I noticed that Sarah had pretty much the same thought, and expressed it first!
    But it really, really does!

I don't like clowns, either, but I very much like that picture. (I also find the dapper dude irresistible.)

  18. And yet, there are always clowns. They don't freak me, but they make me uncomfortable. They demand a response from me that I'm not necessarily prepared to give, so the interaction is always tense.

  19. Very cool photos.

And I'm not much on clowns either...

  20. I love the feeling of those pictures. I want an Iphone so bad I could scream. Everything about them are cool...except the whole ATT issue. Yeah, I don't like that.

  21. Sepia is so restful to the eye. Your photos as always are wonderful...even your clown :)
I am surprised to hear that many people do not like clowns. I like them, and their costumes and find them to be fun.
I wonder why so many people don't like them?

  22. I also hate clowns, mimes aren't my favourite either, must run in the family. I guess John Wayne Gacey ruined it for a lot of people! Really nice pictures anyway. I even like the clown one with the lady in the yellow retro dress reflected in the window.

  23. I agree with Reya Mellicker! Between the digital camera, iPhoto and other software like Photoshop, the photograph has taken on a different reality, as in art. But it still needs a good eye for the capture of a subject of interest to begin with, and what to do with it afterwards.

  24. Yeah, clowns can be scary-looking.

The gentleman below does look dapper.

Paz (who once went to clown school)

    Tell all!
