All good New York journeys begin on the subway...
where I spy a Bohunk heading to Queens in search of beer.
(You can recognize them by their large hands.)
You can tell we are entering central Europe by the bar signs...
and the oompah band
and little girls in lovely costumes
and lots of people eating pork and sauerkraut and dumplings
and poppy seed cake
and dancing....
and drinking Pilsner Urquell or even water.
The lttle girls ethnic custumes are darling. I recall similar dresses with vest worn by the Polish for Memorial Day parades in hometown of Manville, N.J. many years ago when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteI like the photos of the ethnic signs and the festivities. Nice New York blog.
I think I love the people under the umbrella shot the most but it's always hard to choose, all your shots have something wonderful to offer
ReplyDeletelooks like a great day!
What a lovely day out! An oompah band? I've never heard an oompa band before. It appears people are enjoying the music. I've no idea what a Bohunk is, but I'm too afraid to ask... a wonderful post Elizabeth. Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend. Happy Memorial Day to you :)

ReplyDeleteWonderful .. so did the Bohunk know you took his photo?
ReplyDeleteAround the world on a subway ride ... love the umbrella shot, the ambiance at the tables there.

ReplyDeleteGreat shadows & pics Elizabeth!! We have a small festival in July right across from our house in the park - always a fun time!
ReplyDeleteYes, that is Bohunk Robert.
ReplyDeleteA Bohunk is someone who comes from Bohemia, an area in the Czech Republic.
It is not considered insulting --just a name.
When he was three or four his grandma told him to tell everyone he was a Bohunk.
Elizabeth, Elizabeth.......I have so much fun with your blog...thanks a lot. But today...I laugh tears...as a German who has lived in Bavaria before emigrating to Hamburg - which I love much more than Munich...its so strange to find all this european/czech/bavarian events you show us from NY. Bohunk...I googled it...and his big hands ;-)))))...and the word "OOMPTAH-Music"...I sent it to my friends...we have great fun.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your kind of view in and about NY....thanks a lot...Claudia from Hamburg

ReplyDeleteLove those those sweet costume. Looks so much fun :P
ReplyDeleteFabulous images! The subway looks so shiny and clean in your pic.
ReplyDeleteWhat is a Bohemian toast? Surely they don't say Cheers. Do they?
After a quick google, I found this:
ReplyDeleteNot to the Future, nor to the Past;
No drink of Joy or Sorrow;
We drink alone to what will last;
Memories on the Morrow.
Let us live as Old Time passes;
To the Present let Bohemia bow.
Let us raise on high our glasses
To Eternity - the ever-living Now.
haha! love that place--and your pictures capture it wonderfully--love the band!!
ReplyDeleteSo many posts to catch up on since my last visit Elizabeth. Loved them all, particularly the window reflections and squares. You so oftenphoto things one would not think of and they make a great picture. Sign of a great photographer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful trip , and just by taking the subway. NYC is so full of surprises
ReplyDeleteIs "Bohunk" a Bohemian Hunk?
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to see your big plate of Czech food!
BTW, the area of Texas that I grew up in was full of Germans and Czechs. My mother once won a kolache making contest.
