Penn Station and People Rushing About

There is no shortage of people in New York...

and most of them are rushing about.

I was on Penn Station yesterday waiting for a train to Long Island. I wanted to take portraits of people, but, as usual, though others might think I was some sort of nut.

I rather hesitate to approach people with guns.

So, instead I started looking for patterns, and stayed in the same place and let people walk into the camera frame - like in Grand Budapest Hotel.

It was fun.

Anyway...

Robert does somewhat of the same thing in this painting of people in slightly warmer weather - all together - all separate.

I finally managed to have a conversation with a real person even though I didn't want any pizza. Sayed is from Egypt, which, according to him, is a much better country than Morocco...

People and a Hot Dog Stand

One of the great things about New York is that you can dress exactly as you please

and no one will really take any notice. This is a pirate trying to get the dog's attention

and here someone whose hair screams: Look at me ! Look at me!

This litte old lady had sensible shoes and a nice bright mac and
a splendid crochet hat which matched her stockings.

At the dog park

This is the new St.Sebastian in the window of Kleinfeld's. He is not
pierced yet. In fact he looks rather calm about the whole thing. Gosh!

A particularly eye-catching hotdog stand near 14th Street.

What a study in yellow it is!

Pouring with rain now and set to do so for the whole weekend.
Hope your weather is better.

A Florentine Morning

In Florence....

....cyclamen are very much in season.........

.....as are green cauliflower......

.......I want to eat every single type of pasta.....

.....but the bread tends to be a bit plain (on purpose, so it doesn't conflict with the taste of other things).

The shop owner was intent on his paper.
I pretended to be taking photos of the stuff in the window. Oh well.

Lunch at a vinio.  Parma ham on foccacia and lots of local red wine. Yum.

Sunday in the Park with Bloggers

A sunny Sunday in Bryant Park
The Bank of America Building all sheeny and modernismo.

Luckily, wherever you are, leaves and plants soothe.
Judy brings hummus and tomatoes. Margaret brings
cucumber sandwiches. Cherries and walnut cookies
complete the feast. Judy says after lunch that  something
is going to be happening in Times Square.

We walk there and discover all manner of people: those who insist that
God speaks directly to them and that He requires them to shout it at us.

Those who find clothing semi-optional......
We discover the Naked Cowboy's cowgirl
 and all sorts of tourists.
Then, to our delight, there is dancing in the street.
Planned impromptu, but fun anyway. The sun is very bright.

The cops check the paperwork of the event's planners.
Everything in order.

Tuesday: People around Town

Sisters shopping in Macy's.
A sundress with the subway map on it!

I really wanted to take a picture of the uptown doorman with his swanky uniform.
Then this character said," What about me?"

Everyone wants their photo taken in Central Park.

And after Central Park, Bergdorf Goodman's windows.
What impossible elegance.

How one can gaze and gaze.

Oh,Well....

Waiting for the bus and walking the dog
are rather damp occupations lately.
This morning.

But yesterday afternoon the sky was blue
and there was a little hole in the cloud.
LilyHydrangea thinks it looks like an eye.
So then I thought of Keats:

When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance.......

And Hamlet to Polonious:

Do you see yonder cloud that's almost in shape of a camel?

ps. maybe I should get a day job......

pss Lala's beautiful plate post from Spain is here.

An Essay about Nothing with Red Details

Few New Yorkers object to having their photos taken.
I almost always ask first.
23rd Street

A scene on 6th Avenue. The tourists had just had their photo
taken by the young passerby who was returning the camera.
They had posed in front of the Bolt Bus.

Ah, the iconic Obama image by Sheperd Fairey has spawned a zillion imitations.
Here one dear to my heart.

A gallery on 23rd Street has a painted floor
and an almost pink New York Times

How bloggerish to record lunch.

And a carpet at a friend's house.

Not to mention a plate with peas on it that seems to smile.
The tea pot looks quite friendly too.

The Holy Apostles' Garden on 9th Avenue
has fairly infrequently seen red aquilegia.

How small the people on the other side of the track look
with the red stripe over their heads.
