Distressed

High winds this morning billowing the blue tarps on the new building opposite.
Performance art at its best.

The subway map on the C and E lines is now an example of altered art .
Transmuted into something entirely new.

Near Pearl Paint on Lispenard Street the graffiti has reached the higher echelons of palimpsest--or something...

An altered movie poster. Also Lispenard Street.

Another New York art form: the appalling tabloid headline.
Poor A-Roid
A-Fraud
Etc etc.

Serenity at last in Soho.

  1. This is one of my favorite posts of yours. It captures the layers of life in the city. How we can look at something and rewrite its history, its purpose. A palimpsest of life.

  2. Yes, I agree. This post is wonderful. And I simply ADORE the last photo! You know I collect mother and child icons. Mind if I post this one for a while on my sidebar? It's gorgeous!!!

  3. Some of that street art is very interesting - shows what you can find it you go along with a camera and an open mind. The last picture is very serene after the others.

  4. Though I love the high drama of the cloud in the sky, the chaotic journey is exhausting. I was relieved to finally arrive at the fairy tale ending.

  6. Only in NY or London I suppose would a newspaper have such a headline about a sport's player.

When the Yanks and A-Roid play in Seattle - usually the heckling of Alex is merciless. And now it will be over the top. The guy's a true schmuck.

  7. Interesting view of NY. I used to gaze in awe at the graffiti in LA...

  8. Liked the billowing tarp. Could almost feel the cold wind. As for street graffiti, well, it reminds me of dogs marking their territory, even when it is artsy.

  11. I have to say something about the "applauding tabloid headline"...that guys should to be stone Or at least return some of the million of dollars paid to him for cheating a lot of people. Like Bill says the guy's a true schmuck!

  16. I suppose that graffiti can be an art, but I don't like it much; it's like a dog whizzing on a fire hydrant to me.

I like the wind and the madonna best and the word "palimpsest" best.

  17. Hello Elizabeth,

How brave you were to get out and about on this windy day. With breezes as strong as today's, I always wonder just what might come flying right off some our city's construction sites!

The pictures you captured are as fine as ever. My favorite is that last one.

    Best wishes!
