Lunch or a Walk up the Road

On my way to lunch I am offered a little taste of croissant by chilly but cheerful girls.

The seamstress in the dry cleaners busies herself with mending. Look how many colored threads she has. The delivery man is bringing someone else lunch.

A new snack bar on 23rd Street near 5th Avenue reminds me of when I worked at Tunstall's Distinctive Gifts in LA. We had a gum ball machine and whole cardboard boxes full of gum balls in the back and I was allowed to eat as many as I wanted.

Now I prefer soothing monochrome.
(Le Pain Quotidien. 19th Street and Broadway.

The models maintain their snooty composure in the face of brown paper and markdowns.

  1. I'm trying to imagine you with one of those colorful, jumbo gumballs stuffed into your mouth, but failing miserably - or succeeding hilariously? I bet that your mother never let you chew gum as a child!

How nice that New York encourages you to eat (Mangia)! Since we need to eat, too, I now leave your blog to visit the grocery store . . . not as colorful a journey as this one, but perhaps it is only that I lack your clever eye?

  2. Oh boy...croissants! I'm so hungry now that I could eat the whole thing.
I love the way you enjoy the city. Just like a kid looking at gum balls ;)

  4. Ah Mangia ... we used to use them for office lunch meeting catering when I worked in advertising ... sadly the bread was always stale .. now I can see why ...

  6. The sale window shot is very classy! I prefer the monochrome palet, too. I've painted most of the manor soft browns and taupes (except for the red entry and dark blue bat cave).

Now I'm craving one of those croissants.

  15. those models look none too happy about the markdowns. Their clothes were bought right off their little plastic bodies.

  18. I used to live right across the street from that La Pain Quotidein (lazy spelling)... the little brownstone across from it. I was there at the end of the long center table by that faux fireplace eating hard boiled eggs and their magnificent bread. I wonder if we've walked by each other in the village...
