A Post About Inanimate Animals

We have no pets right now.
So our animals live on our plates.
Lots of people out there like M.Kate and Diana are quite dotty about rabbits.

This rather bemused looking one lives on a plate we bought in Italy years ago.

This cheerful character looks a bit muscular. Perhaps he has a gym membership.

I am not a great fan of seagulls. I find them large, unsubtle and oddly depressing.
However, when offered a little jug featuring one in the sort of pottery sold to visitors to the Isle of Wight, I was wild with delight and taken back to wet sand and the smell of seaweed and shrimps.........

This last rabbit lives in the hall on the book shelf. He was painted by an art school friend more than thirty-five years ago.

  1. I'm dotty about rabbits, too. Love 'em. And, yes, I feel the same way regarding seagulls. I like your description of them as being "unsubtle". Hah - I can just imagine you saying that. :) And yet, they ARE unsubtle.

  2. love this...you are too funny...I actually made my friends and husband take me to the village where this pottery has been made for many centuries in tuscany (or was it umbria?)...i really loved visiting all the workshops but now i forgot the name of the village...sad because i'm not even THAT old...thanks for the reminder and a view of your lovely animalistic stuff.

  5. Sqeeeeeeee.....I love the plates. Thanks for doing this blog for all the rabbit addicts. The little rabbit painting is so sweet, I would carry him around too. I have a flat ceramic toad that a friend made me in 5th grade (that was a long time ago...) that I have carried from home to home.

  6. I'm okay with rabbits, but I really like cats. I don't have cat pictures but I've collected a few cat figurines through the years. Now, seagulls, I realize it is rather 'low' of me, but I rather like them. They're noisy trash eaters but whenever I see one, I am transported to a world of beach and surf

  7. I love your bunnies! One of the best parts about not living in London proper is taking the train during prime "bunny time" (early morning, late afternoon) and seeing them in the fields. I love the painting best :-)

  10. I love that rabbit - I would think that all these animals (if the plates are in constant use) have almost become part of the family.

  17. All of your inanimate pets are charming! (I really adore that little rabbit painted by your friend.)

I would much rather have some chickens on the china . . . Emma Bridgewater does some nice ones . . . than the ones I have in real life. I am not enjoying my pet chores in this raw weather!

  18. Hello Elizabeth,

I am another fan of that bunny painting. Do you have any others that that artist?

Seagulls make me think of the Staten Island Ferry. And the Staten Island Ferry makes me think of seagulls. Hey, come to think of it, I have not been on the ferry in many years.

See what thoughts you have encouraged?
