A Walk Round the Pond/Centerport LI

We used to live in a house backing on to the little nature preserve that contained this pond.

So I used to tramp round it every day.

And look at the bittersweet reflected in the water.

This is a particularly lovely time of year because of the dramatic colors. In February it is subtle, dull and muddy but I used to go there anyway.

There have been a lot of f leaf pictures in the blogosphere lately - but how can one possibly resist?
Elizabeth Bunsen's are among the very best.

This time of year I always think of Shelley's description of fallen leaves:

O WILD West Wind, thou breath of Autumn's being—
Thou from whose unseen presence the leaves dead
Are driven, like ghosts from an enchanter fleeing,
Yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red,
Pestilence-stricken multitudes!

The bright moss looks exactly like green velvet.
Now I'm off to vote!

  1. Splendid autumnal glory, Elizabeth! How wonderful to live right near such a tranquil spot! My mind is all scattered today for what will happen with the election back home today...Hard being so far from home on a day like today--LOL! I sent in my absentee ballot a month ago...We'll be tuned into news all night! Happy Day, my friend ((HUGS))

  2. Luscious leaves. we are voting soon too.

Isn't it wonderful to know that almost 200 years after Shelley saw those leaves we can still enjoys them and see them through his work.

Yes - the little dog on my blog is mine - Tess - a Border terrier. She is a darling, eight months old, chews everything, very headstrong, very loveable - everything a terrier should be. Regards

  16. Beautiful post...
The champagne's been flowing here, the tears of joy too..!
Even those whose candidate did not win have reason to celebrate.
    We all do..!
Barack Obama's impressive victory says a lot about America.
Last night voters decided that they didn't want to look back. They wanted to step into the future...
    Bravo and Thank You..!

  17. What a beautiful spot!

    Today is a glorious day!

  18. Wonderful reflections and truly beautiful leaves. Autumn IS a glorious season!

I did not buy the cocoa locally. It was a gift from a US Marine who was on a ship and found it in a foreign port and, knowing how much I love chocolate, he sent it to me as a thank you gift for my hospitality to him. It is the best cocoa I've ever tasted.

  19. There seem to be walks through the woods everywhere in the blogosphere this morning, and it's grand. Your post was exquisite, and thank you for the Shelley. A fall walk is just theing to help us wake-up from an eight year nightmare.

  20. These are beautiful pictures of autumn! I've always loved that poem by Shelley, too.

  21. Splendid autumn impressions! So beautiful!

I look forward to hearing from you!
