Cold Day at the Green Market
Clear bright and bitter out.
Shakespeare said it best.
WHEN icicles hang by the wall,
And Dick the shepherd blows his nail,
And Tom bears logs into the hall,
And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipp'd, and ways be foul,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
To-whit!
To-who!—a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.
A costume suitable for the season.
Windfall Farms had to protect the delicate mesclun salad by rigging up a little plastic edifice...
....where one of the helpers warmed her leg on the stove.
Even the dogs had busted out their winter coats.
When all aloud the wind doe blow,
And coughing drowns the parson's saw,
And birds sit brooding in the snow,
And Marian's nose looks red and raw,
When roasted crabs hiss in the bowl,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
To-whit!
To-who!—a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.
I always sympathize with Marian.

Oh my! You can see how cold it is there!! Despite the sunshine it is almost as if you can see the ice in the air.
ReplyDeleteIt is windy and freezing in London today. Well, I say freezing but I am yet to wear my ear warmers. It is freezing when you have to cover your mouth and nose to stop them from aching with cold!
Love those dogs! I can tell it is cold there, and I like that morning light. It makes you feel like it is much warmer when people stand on the lighted part of the street. Great pictures :o)
ReplyDeleteHere I sit shivering because it's 'only' 50 degrees. Is the Green Market open every day all year long?
ReplyDeleteCurrently at 7:45AM it's 36 degrees here. Cold. A day to work in the studio. The Cascades - about 60 miles to the east - its' 28 degrees and hopefully the snow is falling. Time for winter.
ReplyDeletebrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....
ReplyDeletebeautiful and evocative as always. thanks! x j
I always thought Greasy Joan sounded a bit squirmy somehow!
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely photos you do take.
Thanks for visiting mine, things have been a little hard-going, but we were not unprepared, and are improving well. It was the Downs at Colwall where I worked, in 1981, for just a few months before University. The couple who ran it left that year, they weren't called Singleton, but their name escapes me now. If someone said it I'd know, or I might remember in the middle of the night!
I was in NYC on Saturday. Not the best day to be outside. Great pictures though!
ReplyDeleteLove's Labor Lost... a perfect poem for such an icy day. Fifteen degrees here by the Tetons. But sunny as is there. Good eye on the photos!
ReplyDeleteIt is getting REALLY COLD!!!
ReplyDeleteThe rhymes are nice and cute :-)
Ooh, I have a chill!
ReplyDeleteA very cold, dark and rainy day here in Central Ohio and it's probably heading your direction!
ReplyDeleteI'll be Greasy Willow this week standing over my pots! :^)
Crispy cold light, you've caught it well.
ReplyDeleteAs I read your post, I was gobbling up a Cameo apple bought at that market a week ago. I let those apples warm up indoors for a while.
xo
You share New York so well, Elizabeth. I love coming here.
ReplyDeleteoh my, it does look cold, probably about the same temps we had here....i opted to stay in, these people are much braver than me!
ReplyDeleteI love that market so much - sun, sleet, wind!
ReplyDeletebrr...looks cold to me, I remembered when I was in the UK for a month long time ago, going out was a chore..with the heavy coats. I'll soak up the sun here for you hehe :D
ReplyDeleteEveryon'e bundled up..even the dogs...must be cold! It's been very cold over here...bbbrrr...In the 20's C some days. Windy and cold...tough staying outside for long! Happy Day, Elizabeth! Keep warm there... ;o) ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteYou show such lovely shots of New York. That market looks good. Reminds me of markets in Tashkent many years ago when each chrysanthemum had a plastic cosy over its head to keep it from the frost.
ReplyDeleteI shivered as I looked at your pictures! The dogs in green look very smart: they must wear the same outfits for St Patrick's Day!
ReplyDeleteBrrr! It's colder there for the moment than it is here--rainy and wet today. Bibi would like that green coat in a smaller size.
ReplyDeleteBrrr!
ReplyDeleteWe had a brisk walk yesterday in our 20 degree weather. At least it was sunny...
Winter seems to have swept into more than a few places over the last days!
ReplyDeleteWinter has| reached New York as| well!
ReplyDeleteDick the shepard blows his nail- Oh that William- silly man!
ReplyDeleteI am so freezing after viewing these photos- you truly captured it!
i took a few Shakespear classes at U. Always ALWAYS blew me away. I tired to speak like that for about a week- I lost all of my friends....
Great shots, I was in New York in december 2005 and It was like being back!! I really want to visit again! We did an open top bus ride in the snow, thats dedication!
ReplyDeleteI love markets and this reminds me of the cold winter markets we had in winter or now close to christmas the chritskindle markets where you drink warm gluhwine to stay warm inside yum
