The Russian Tearoom

My birthday was last month but I'm quite happy to celebrate it indefinitely.

Most recent stop - on a bitterly cold (almost Russian?) Tuesday - was legendary Russian TeaRoom which was founded in 1927 by members of the Russian Ballet.

The decor is warm:  red and gold and green - almost over the top with red Christmas tree balls and bright samovars.

Champagne and caviar with tea? Of course!

Not sure what you are meant to do with the cherries... smoked salmon sandwiches (the caviar eaten already). The waiters wear retro costumes

A birthday? Well, of course

and cakes and more champagne.

On the walls all sorts of Russian art

and for sale rather elaborate nesting dolls.

  2. All very grand Elizabeth. Not sure about the caviar, but love the champagne and the smoked salmon - and those matrioshka dolls are lovely too.

  4. Elizabeth, the RTR seems made for celebrations! What an elegant tea. The waiter seems to have a link to The Grand Budapest Hotel, does he not?

  5. How wonderful !
    Why not keep celebrating !
One year for my son we had a moth of his Birthday. It just seemed to go on and on. Which was great because his Birthday is right before Christmas.

    cheers, parsnip

  7. Hello Elizabeth,

    Happy Birthday!

What a fabulous place to take tea. This would be just our sort of place. So decadent to have champagne and caviar for tea but so much more exciting than scones. However, to have both is luxury indeed!

  8. I would like to go there on my next visit to NYC. Last trip I went to Russ and Daughters and thoroughly enjoyed breakfast there.
