Twilight

It was almost dark but the camera, which plays tricks, detected some blue in the sky still.
The lovely, elegant, iconic Empire State Building will probably shortly
be obscured by some very tall, not very interesting building.

Looking south from the roof. The Port Authority Building looks
a bit like a great big cruise ship anchored in Chelsea.

Great excitement later in the evening. It looks as if the firetruck
is ablaze, but in fact, the flashes are just tricks of the camera.

Flotsam

Sand, dried grasses and rose hips beneath the feet.

Six steps up towards the Sound.

 Two chairs --with requisite shadows!

And a collection of the stuff that washes up on the beach.

There is no one there but us which is rather odd but nice........

So it was fun to float around like a little bit of seaweed

 or a feather.....

Wednesday Evening at Sunset

Looking west towards the Hudson from our apartment the sinking sun is reflected in the windows.

A little later the whole sky turned an astounding scarlet -------I have not fiddled with the color in the photo.
Robert said that the sky looked a lot like a very red sea.

Union Square

Lots of people about on a Saturday morning.

I was very taken with this woman's color co-ordination.....

and this wildflower bouquet.
The only trouble with wildflowers is that they wilt so very soon.

 Red peppers and green peppers

and lo and behold, cabbages. I imagine all these beauties gracing
kitchen tables just waiting to be chopped up.

We'll add onions and make soup straight away....

(We could add parsnips and funny little squash or save them to be roasted later.)

Who knew how many flowers were edible?

The callas were enchanting.

Seen

Rather retro man and boy made of reflective stuff
in the window of Brooklyn Industries. Much too much going on
and rather too much of looking like things for fall. Oh dear!

On 22nd Street, the poor weed got incorporated into
the tagging. Plant graffiti.

For some reason only one red car amongst all the other toy ones.

Trailer Park

Trailer Park on 23rd Street celebrates the worst/best excesses of American kitsch. "Where do they get this stuff?" Robert asked.
"Probably like in the TV show 'Pickers'."

It's all so selfconsciously awful: the cracked vinyl kitchen chair,
the retro TV, the bowling stuff, the velvet Elvises.
I'm not sure whether to be amused or appalled.

What has happened to poor Marilyn's teeth?

The little hula girl looks pretty friendly though.

Never a Dull Moment

So.....

....they are doing construction on the corner of 10th Avenue and 23rd Street. A worker wobbles on the perilous first things to do with beams. However, a giant inflatable rat lurks nearby. A sign that some of the construction is being done by non-union labor.

But the tiny speck of the moon hovers over the high line as I walk to the dog park.......

....through the ranks of picketers who are pretty friendly and like Buster. This chap, taking a little break, is a splendid piece of Americana --  his Japanese bike adorned with the American flag and a t-shirt that is an artwork in itself.

So, here is the little garden. The man with his foot on the railing is a sound effects guy. Yesterday morning they were shooting a movie pretty early. A yellow taxi was planted slap in the intersection of 8th Avenue and 23rd Street. A stunt driver gunned the engine of an SUV right by the little garden, accelerated, drove amazingly fast and BAM !

"Bet, he's got a headache," the sound guy said of the stunt driver.
I asked what the film was and it sounded like an action one.
Here are six of the several million people working on the movie.
Apparently the police got several 911 calls about the stunt crash which was pretty terrifying.

There is a giveaway at The World Examining Works  ( my other blog) in conjunction with photographer Susanna Gordon . Check it out.
