A Meditation on Waves and Some Seagulls

Tuesday at Robert Moses Beach.

A very bright clear day when the holiday crowds had melted away.

The water was still warm

The sand washed wonderfully clean and

the sky enormous.

For some reason the seagulls think it important to shower in fresh water.

Food at the Beach

Breakfast at the beach requires some organization.
Charcoal, frying pans, spatulas. Salt and pepper.
We forget pot holders and use paper towels instead.

Lots of fruit as a cover for the real stuff: bacon, eggs and sausages.

Oh, oh, oh, the grease and the plastic forks
 Not a bit eco-friendly
But what fun!

ps. Several people wondered where this is exactly.
Field #3 at Robert Moses, straight over the causeway. Beach nearest the tower.
Picnic tables and grills provided. (Bring your own charcoal, utensils and food.)
We arrived at about 8:30 and were the only ones there.....
Definitely worth it.

A Very Cold Afternoon at the Beach

We left it rather late to go down to the beach.
It was beastly cold.
Here Huntington Bay looking towards Northport.

The ubiquitous reeds and bare tree against fading light.
There were some kids at the beach with their dog.
One of the boys was wearing shorts. Ah youth...

The little boats don't look very inviting.

Luckily Celeste has a very inviting chair by the fire...

...and offers a nice cup of tea.

Beach

Nothing like a day at the beach to blow away the fumes of the city.
Robert Moses is the continuation of Jones Beach and stretches for mile upon mile just off the south shore of Long Island.

On Tuesday the waves were pretty wild and most people had fun splashing on the shore.

Only rather hardy, brave souls actually swam.
In view of all the depressing news about childhood obesity in the US, I recommend parents take take their children to the beach and let them run around to their hearts' content.
Much better than mouldering in front of the TV/computer.......but that's just me.

The requisite artsy photo of the fence that keeps the dunes in check.

The seagulls are beach- appropriate but very greedy.
Always on the lookout for the stray bit of sandwich.......
But here they are trying to behave, and are are noting the warning sign and not going swimming.

A voracious seagull once snatched R's hamburger right out of his hand as it was on its way to his mouth.
Here they decorate the top of the snack bar awaiting their next victim.
Here's hoping all of you get to the beach very soon.
