Trains and Stuff/ Shadow Shot Sunday

For more Shadow Shots go to Heyharriet!

Penn Station. Friday afternoon.

The Long Island Railroad train draws in.

The weather outside is frightful. Such wintry skies over Forest Hills.

The decor of the On Parade Diner on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset is totally over the top.
One of the waiters adopts the pensive pose of James Dean in the mural.

5pm.Hicksville Station. A chilly sun sets in the direction of Manhattan and its light bounces off the posters and railing.

Thoughts About Long Island

Myers' Farm just off Woodbury Road. Note the John Deere tractor and inflatable snowman.
Towards the end of The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway ponders Long Island "a fresh green breast of the New World".
Nowadays it tends to look more like the picture below.

This is Mineola railway station.

To get to Long Island you have the choice of driving along the LIE (Long Island Expressway) or taking the LIRR (Long Island Railroad).
Both have their drawbacks.
The people on the LIRR offer a constant challenge to bossy people like me.
They will not shut up.
Mostly they yak on cell phones. This man  --giving me the evil eye -- was pontificating about the state of the economy in a very loud voice to a real person. TMI (Too Much Information).
At least it was not his private life.(Shudder).
My revenge is taking photos.

Long Island Rail Road

The Long Island Rail Road is useful because it helps you get out of the city. As with any local commuter rail line, there is always lots to complain about. The most dreary thing currently are the huge number of people having not very interesting conversations at a million decibels. Fascinating people don't let you overhear them.
That said, I adore any trains.

Friday was very stormy and the buildings in Queens looked dramatic against the dark threatening sky.

A strange beauty in overhead wires.
And very green grass because this year has been so amazingly wet.

We see the world aslant from the train, and everything very quickly.
Since I'm a very nosy person, I like the little glimpses into other people's back gardens.

Long Island is horizontal, rather than vertical. Good back yard snooping there.

Architecture

The Empire State Building from 23rd Street. Afternoon light.
New York architecture tends to the vertical and the dramatic.

Heading towards Manhattan on the Long Island Rail road.
Late afternoon.

The same thing........

7th Avenue at 20th Street.

Walking along 9th Avenue.
