Deli Fire (No one Hurt!)

We arrived home from the beach on Monday to find 23rd Street blocked off. The boiler in the deli next to the diner had caught on fire. You could tell from the attitude of the fire fighters that, other than the fire, nothing awful had happened.

Lots and lots of firefighters

How stifling hot the uniforms must be on a sunny day!

Lots of onlookers of course (including me).

How impressive a firetruck is!

Packing up kit when all the fuss was dying down. All New Yorkers are very proud of the fire department.

  2. New York City firefighters are true heroes, every day of every year. I also think that their vehicles are amazing.

It's good that the boiler fire got dealt with quickly!

Your photos tell the story very well.

  6. Wow, lots of fireman for a little deli fire. Can we borrow some of FDNY's finest (truly!) to fight a few fires out here?

  9. Looks like a great scare for everyone. The firefighters looked at you as if you were a dangerous person in the last shot

  11. How big was the fire to justify so many firemen? Must have been pretty huge. Scary!

  12. Willow: we would happily send some of our super firefighters to places they are needed.

It was quite a big fire (through a 5story building) but neither side was affected. The windows are now all boarded up and the deli man is waiting for all sorts of insurance etc etc.

They do seem to respond with more firefighters than one would think were needed....but you never know....
