The city is pretty nice when everyone goes away for the long weekend and
the town fills up with tourists and out of towners. This is a rather muddled picture of a garbage truck reflected in the window of the now defunct Viceroy diner on 8th Avenue.
This man is waiting to cross 17th Street. A century ago people would have been aghast to see a woman in pants.....equal opportunity in clothing for all.....
People in general on 14th St and 9th Avenue.
A rather retro dry cleaners.............
I'm not quite sure where this character (seen here on the corner of 23rd St and 8th Avenue) gets his costume laundered. For some reason I sight him about once a year.
We used to have one crossing guard who actually crossed children and handicapped people. We now have three who chat to each other........
Anyway, I managed to walk on the little bit of The High Line between 20th and 23rd Street that for some reason I'd missed. A nice soft lawn for sitting on.....
and a grove of trees to emerge from.......
Some friends have recently enjoyed a Central Park Sightseeing tour
which makes me think that visitors know much more about New York than I do.
Rain until the end of the week - rather a relief after much too hot!
Yes, a holiday when everyone leaves town to get away from the crowds so they can gather in crowds in the woods and on the beaches and at the ball parks. Somehow it makes sense. I guess. Staying at home to see odd people and unusual modes of dress also makes sense. I guess.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a garbage truck as good as in your picture of its reflection!
ReplyDeleteI noticed yesterday that not only have the Viennese returned into town, also tourist are showing up in droves again.
So good. City is breathing.
ReplyDeleteI am loving your pictures it makes me want to return.
ReplyDeleteSounds like calm has been restored and a good day to have visited NY. The little stall selling coffee or doughnuts reminds me of those that were around George Square in Glasgow just last week. I will finish my blog about the BP movie soon and then move on.
ReplyDeleteI know film making must be a common sight in your parts but for us, living in Glasgow, it is a bit of a novelty! I think I may have caught a pic of the man himself but if so, and others can decide, it was by accident rather than design...!
We have our characters here too - you've just got to smile!
What a difference a week or so makes! Always wonderful to go on a tour of New York with you and you have to love its color and the people. LOVE LOVE NYC!
ReplyDeleteI really like the first photo... can't believe the Viceroy Dinner is closed. I don't know about the food but the windows and the floor are beautiful !
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear things are getting back to normal, or whatever is close to it.
cheers, parsnip
Opps forgot....
ReplyDeleteI hope Green Beard Man doesn't wear his white shoes after today what a faux pas that would be !
cheers, parsnip
Elizabeth, I observed Labor Day by ... working, and being glad to have a job.
ReplyDeleteAh, the green-bearded man with the dress...I last saw him in the Easter Parade. (I think he really enjoys holidays!)
As always, your photos do a grand job of showing what is going on in New York.
Hoping to see you soon. xo
What a nice way to spend Labor Day, Elizabeth!
ReplyDeleteI arrived home after a nine hour drive home from Georgia (visiting my daughter) and could not wait to go to the park and walk, walk, walk!
Walking around the neighborhoods of NYC seems SO fun on a day like this! thanks for taking us with you.
Love that first picture! Sorry about the diner. It looks like it was a great place. Not that I didn't love all the pictures, but that one really struck me.
ReplyDeleteBarbara
you showed how I could imagine NY-a mixture of people, ideas, places. Very good!
ReplyDeleteCould your character be Grayson Perry travelling incognito?!
ReplyDeleteI love your images, particularly the first. When I eventually visit New York, I shall feel very 'at home'!!
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, I am off to Ireland for a week.
I think the Viceroy was the first restaurant I ever went to in the city without my parents. Sorry to hear it's gone. Someday I will make it to the highline. Someday.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots as always.
Big cities have such interesting people.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason your text is not showing up well on my computer- It blends in with the lightness of the background, could be that my computer is ancient and a tank...I thought the umbrella in the people shot was "DEATH" floating above the people having their lunch- that is how bad my computer is!
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice to see the city (or anywhere) through someone else's eyes! Thank you for sharing such wonderful photos!
ReplyDeleteLove the photos. How nice to have a stroll around the city with your camera. The high line is one of my favorite spots to go to when I visit. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteAs always, your pictures are lovely!
ReplyDeleteI'm so looking forward to visiting the second part of the Highline when I come back, hopefully next year!
What fun shots! I love the diversity of the city both of the inhabitants and the visitors.
ReplyDeleteSorry to be so late to visit. I owe you an email after I get this MS to my agent Friday and hopefully before I get a puppy on Sunday. At least the kids are back in school now.
Great photos, Elizabeth! It makes me know better the city.
ReplyDeleteI love the crazies around the city. I'll miss them when I go home, but I'm sure Suffolk will have its fair share... Claire
ReplyDeleteI loved your pictures, especially the one where a man is standing wearing a skirt and other one wearing a very funny costume.
