Years ago I used to bike by the old World Trade Center quite often. I went up one of the old Twin towers in 1993 - the week before the very first small bombing.
Anyway, when my friend Daryl asked me to lunch at the new One World Trade Center, I was very excited having only seen the tower from a distance.
So subway to WTC
up the steps...
Lovely tower ahead.
Madly imposing desk and stringent security (both good.)
I look up in the lobby
am greeted by Daryl looking stunningly slim and chic - as ever.
We lunch in the elegant Conde Nast cafeteria
from which there are astounding views - see the reflecting pool below and The Statue of Liberty upper right.
So much building going on downtown. Cranes everywhere - all very exciting.
Ah, to be young and pale and red-headed - and for horrid brown walls to actually work.
In the lobby downstairs a vast abstract painting I love. Gosh, it's good to get out of the house once in a while and look about me.
Daryl has daily splendid photos of downtown and uptown world on Instagram. You can see them here DARYL10024
Wonderful post Elizabeth and fantastic to see inside the W T C - and to see the views from high up.
ReplyDeleteNot that great photos as I was in a rush - but I was impressed and amazed!
Deletewhat a glorious post. And what an amazing building. thanks for showing us around!
ReplyDeletep.s your friend is so glamorous!
ReplyDeleteShe is!
DeleteA very impressive post, lovely to see the amazing building.
ReplyDeleteThank You for taking time out to take some photos for us.
ReplyDeleteThe vast abstract painting is outstanding. I saw (CBS News ?) about the artist and how he painted it.
I adore your friends hair. My gray is all over the place but not very attractive. I think it is from all the drugs I have to take. le sigh.
going out and about must have been lovely after all the awful weather you have been having.
Hope this means your spring is coming.
cheers, parsnip
Gray hair can be stunning.
DeleteActually it's still cold - 32F today (sigh)
That looks amazing. We took our boys up to the top of one of the Twin Towers in 2000. I would love to see this new building, think I might get the head staggers though!
ReplyDeleteThe private Conde Nast elevator direct to the 34th floor was very quick and unscary. I hate elevators and enclosed spaces, but, oddly, this one felt fine. I think you would love it.
Deletethe link you sent did not work but i Googled your blog and here i am ... such a nice lunch and even nicer to catch up with .. amazing it took only 5 years!!!!!!!!!!!!! next get together much sooner, i hope!
ReplyDeleteSorry about link error - you notice everyone admires your hair!
DeleteWow, what a view! The Statue of Liberty looks so tiny from there. Thanks for the tour, Elizabeth!
ReplyDeleteLovely to hear from you, dear Sara.
DeleteSending warm greetings.
nice to see trade center. i am new one your blog. thanks t.c.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful photos of NYC. Beneath this medium brown hair of mine is a cloud of white, if I had the courage of your friend I'd let my tresses age naturally.Loved your post!
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth. Popped over from Daryl's to see your day. That is a spectacular building and one day I really must make an effort and visit NY (all the way form over here on the West Coast). I've been thru NY state quite a few times, but never really explored the city. Soon, I think. :D
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, great for you to have had a clear blue sky day for your get together downtown. Yes the building is very dramatic, shiny new and big, and the views are also dramatic. But you know what, I am very glad that I don't work that far downtown anymore.

wow...what a view.....didn't make it up the new World Trade Centre when I went down there but did take in the view in Century 21 instead!!
ReplyDeleteHow amazing to see it Elizabeth. It seems like yesterday that they were razed to the ground and look what a magnificent place it is now. Thanks so much for the tour! x
ReplyDeleteI know! I found going down there very depressing while it was all a disastrous mess - and now it is very much alive and thriving.
DeleteI very much enjoyed seeing the new building, and the restaurant looks beautiful. I let my hair grow out four years ago and now it is silver blonde and the same length as your friend's. I have never regretted giving up the three weekly trips to have it colored and saving that money.
ReplyDeleteMost hair looks better natural - I think. Then one can spend the savings on a super cut!
DeleteHappy weekend.
Great pictures! I can't wait to get back to New York for a visit, haven't been since 2010.
ReplyDeleteIt would be great to have a cup of tea together!
DeleteHow wonderfully totally New York! I do love the way our lives are so different and yet can touch. Fabulous.
ReplyDeleteSo good to see you both meeting in that magnificent place!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for giving us these wonderful glimpses. I've taken many photos of the Freedom Tower at different points of construction but have yet to go inside. Your photos are fabulous. It's so bittersweet, isn't it?? New York rocks!!!! : ) Have a beautiful week!! xoxo
ReplyDelete~ Wendy
The building is beautiful. I am pleased to see it finished. We saw it several years ago when it was not finished yet – I wrote a post on it. I just looked and cannot believe that we went there in 2011 – the years went back too quickly (here is the post: http://avagabonde.blogspot.com/2011/10/new-york-visiting-911-memorial.html.) We went back to NYC since but not to the Tower. I also like that abstract painting that you showed. Thank you for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteYour post is so interesting!
DeleteMy, oh my! What spectacular views and what a different world from West Coast Suburbia. Thank you for letting me take a peek. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures, thank you for sharing those! It's interesting to see how the new Wolrd Trade center worked out. I agree, the horrid brown walls work:)
ReplyDeletegreetings from Paris
PS I love NY
