Red, White and Blue at the Beach

The causeway to Robert Moses beach.

The first Monday of the school holidays.

So many important things to do.

Or to think about doing.

Important to keep the sea at bay.

And eat a lunch much frowned upon indoors.

Even the parking lot feels like summer.
At last.

Evening Light/ShadowShotSunday

For other cool ShadowShots go to Heyharriet.

The weather in New York this so called summer has been quite batty.
Here is an example. Friday evening about seven, all wet, billowy and thundery.

After the storm has cleared just after eight,
the setting sun cannons down 23rd Street.

At eight thirty, the sky over the Empire State Building
is all cotton ball puffy pink.
(None of the colors have been manipulated at all.)

Rat, Cat, Bird, Child etc.

A rat in the Meatpacking District.
Such beady eyes.

A cat who may or may not get adopted.
ASPCA van on 23rd St.

A present from Turkey. Blue indeed.

More blue. High Line.
Wednesday evening.

Buster usually lives in his own blog.
Here he makes a celebrity guest appearance.

Even Better at Night: The High Line Continued

The new after supper entertainment: walking on the High Line.

Tuesday evening is misty. The Empire State Building
looms beyond the General Theological Seminary.

Deniz walks past illuminated grasses.

In the distance, the lights of Jersey.

Department of VerySmallWorld: I comment on the High
Line blog. Salmaan Khan, one of my former students, responds.
He works for the High Line.

23rd Street

A very small, serene monk walks down the opposite side of the street
from where I was sitting having a cup of tea in Joe.

Inside the cafe,  plans are made to fix up an apartment.

Just near the Chelsea Hotel they are shooting an independent film.

By the fruit stand two visitors from Cuba
 meet a woman wearing a Che T-shirt.

Wild Nights

Stormy skies and a plane.
Yesterday 8pm

Because of the endless rainy weather,
there have been super clouds at night.

My little camera is unsophisticated
and the dog is pulling on his lead.

The trees between the buildings are in full leaf.

Things to Do

Buy cup cakes from a truck on 5th Avenue.

Line up for a casting call on 24th Street.

Feel anxious that one might not be chosen.

Check the cell phone in Chelsea Market while looking an
awful lot like a Duane Hansen sculpture.

Wash hands on the High Line.

And, of course, take photographs of it all.
Mexican visitors on 22nd Street.

Mug Monday

Valerie of AcornMoon and Pat of Weaver of Grass
are hosting a Monday roundup of favorite mugs.
Awfully hard to photograph a mug.
Above: the mug I actually drink my tea out of.

This is a picture of a mug which haunts me.
Courtesy of Google Images.

Tragic Mug Haiku

Coronation Day
they gave me a mug alas
dropped the same day

ps: all my friends did not break their mugs, and were forced to drink milk out of them every day.

High Line/Say goodbye to Tallulah, Bailey*

We had been waiting for the High Line to open for ever.
And it's wonderful.
Such a meld of post-industrial chic
and nature.

It's been written about all over the place ---
an old railway line above the streets.

Flowers and grasses planted between old railway ties.

Coneflowers against superannuated windows.
You can glimpse the river between the buildings here
and lots of river nearer 14th Street.
Lots and lots of people.

*Mother to small child. Overheard at the 20th St. exit.

Things Seen

Pink tinged clouds after gray upon gray.

Monsters that somehow got into a car.

A little girl waiting for a carriage ride.

And a boy having his portrait drawn.

Random Curiosities/Uptown

A horseman in Central Park.

A dress with faces on it. Bergdorf window.

A mosaic with palm trees and skyscrapers.
East 60's.

A poster commemorating the Society of Illustrators Costume Ball 1922.
I'm sure Dr.Seuss had studied this artist.
Enlarge to see all the people who attended the ball.

People should have stashed their Christmas decorations by now.
Artificial poinsettias in June are not cheerful.
